LOW POTASSIUM DIET
Potassium is a mineral found in many foods, especially fruits, and vegetables. Healthy kidneys keep the right amount of potassium in the blood to keep the heart beating at a stead↙y pace. Potassium levels can rise between dialysis sessions and affect your heartbeat. Eating too much potassium can be dangerous to your heart. It may even cause death.

To control potassium levels in our blood, avoid foods that are rich in potassium.

Tips for lowering potassium levels in foods

·         Dialyzing / leaching potatoes and other vegetables / dals - you can remove some of the potassium from potatoes and other vegetables by peeling them, then soaking them in large amount of water for several hours before use.
·         Drain and rinse well before cooking
·         Cooking all the vegetables helps removing some potassium.
·         Avoid taking too much raw salad.
·         Limiting potassium content by portion control (the amount of a food that you eat at one time) for e.g. a high potassium tomato (1small) provides 273mg of potassium. If you cut a thin slice to accent your sandwich it provides much less; 1/6th of 1 small tomato provides 45mg of potassium.
